Painting on Vellum in Transylvania, Romania

Learn my approach to painting on vellum during this five-day workshop. We will begin by doing some exercises on small bits of vellum to learn technique and get 
a feel for painting on this surface. Then choose your painting subjects from a variety of seasonal wild plants you find in the surrounding hills.

  

This class is designed for students new to vellum (learn how to successfully paint on vellum) as well as for more experienced vellum painters (learn new tricks and techniques). The workshop combines demonstrations, discussion of materials and techniques, hands-on time for developing skills, and lots of individual attention and feedback. Handouts with step-by-step instructions will be provided.

Experienced vellum painters can use this as a studio class to work on anything they like.

   

Fee includes tuition for 5-day workshop, 6 nights accommodation in your own room with bathroom, all food and wine, and airport transfers from Sibiu airport (via Vienna or Munich is best).

Painting Beautiful Fruits on Vellum in France

Clos Mirabel

Learn my approach to painting on vellum during this five-day workshop at the beautiful Clos Mirabel in the south of France. We will begin by doing some exercises on small bits of vellum to learn technique and to get a feel for painting on this surface. Then, we will explore the grounds of Clos Mirabel to choose painting subjects. Apples, pears, plums, figs, kiwis, and berries will be at their peak this time of the year. You might also choose to do a Hoefnagel-Inspired painting of the treasures you find in the gardens.

 

​This class is designed for students new to vellum (learn how to successfully paint on vellum) as well as for more experienced vellum painters (learn new tricks and techniques). The workshop combines demonstrations, discussion of materials and techniques, hands-on time for developing skills, and lots of individual attention and feedback. Zoom Lectures and Classes

These are instruction-only online classes. You will not be working along which allows you the opportunity to see everything and not miss a word. Classes are a combination of slide presentations, pre-recorded videos, live demonstrations, and plenty of time for questions. Most classes are designed for artists at all levels. If they are not, or if there are special requirements, that will be noted in the class description.

Classes will be recorded and available to students for 10 days after each session.

Drawing with Ballpoint Pen (online class)

Ballpoint pen can be used to create drawings with very subtle or very bold shading. In this demonstration-only (you will not be creating work during class) Zoom class, we will talk about materials, look at works done in ballpoint pen, and learn techniques for creating ballpoint pen drawings. There will be time at the end of class for questions.

Painting Acorns on Vellum (online class)

Wednesdays, October 6 (Friday), 11, 18, 2023 (please note change in start date)

12:00 - 2:30 pm (Central Time)

Limit:  15 students

Cost:  $275 (you will be billed through PayPal)

In this class we will learn to draw and paint acorns, oak branches, and dried oak leaves using watercolor on vellum. Students will also learn to mix realistic greens and browns. This is a demonstration-only Zoom class (you will not be creating work during class), but you will have the opportunity to email scans of your work for feedback between classes.

Painting Roses on Vellum (online class)

Wednesdays, November 8, 15, 29, December 6, 2023

Limit:  15 students

Old roses are a favorite flower of mine and I love drawing and painting them. In this class, I will share what I have learned about drawing and painting roses, their leaves, buds, thorns, and stems, as well as how to mix beautiful rose colors. Students may work from roses purchased at a florist, from photos they’ve taken during the summer, or even from old dried roses. This is a demonstration-only Zoom class (you will not be creating work during class), but you will have the opportunity to email scans of your work for feedback between classes. This class is for artists with some experience painting on vellum.

Painting Feathers on Vellum (online class)

Feathers are so fun to paint and they make nice additions to Hoefnagel-Inspired pieces. In this class we will talk about the structure of feathers and how to draw and paint them on vellum. Please note: The possession of feathers and other parts of native North American birds without a permit is prohibited by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Therefore, I will be demonstrating turkey feathers and peacock feathers from life and other feathers will be painted from photographs. This is a demonstration-only Zoom class (you will not be creating work during class), but you will have the opportunity to email scans of your work for feedback between classes. This class is for artists at all levels.
